Liza Jane MacNaughton’s journey to ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ began with a decision made later in life—to return to school and complete an education she had once set aside.

Born and raised in England, she attended secretarial school before moving to California, where she raised her family and remained active in her community. In her 40s, she enrolled at Cal State Hayward and earned a degree in Spanish in 1990—an experience that affirmed the value of continued learning and personal growth.

That experience later informed her work in supporting others.

In 2011, after learning that students were leaving ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ due to financial hardship, Liza Jane partnered with Luanne Rotticci to co-found the Save Our Students (SOS) Scholarship. The program provides emergency funding to students at risk of dropping out and has supported nearly 200 students, helping them remain enrolled and complete their degrees.

“I know what it means to wait for an opportunity,” she says. “And I know how important it is when that opportunity comes.”

Her involvement extends beyond financial support. Liza Jane remains engaged with the program—participating in scholarship activities, connecting with students, and helping foster a sense of community among recipients.

Her broader service reflects that same commitment. She has been involved with the Woodside Atherton Garden Club and the Woodside Landscape Committee, and has spent time tutoring students and teaching English as a second language to new immigrants.

Over time, her work has helped sustain not only a scholarship, but a network of support— one that continues to connect students, alumni, and community members through shared investment in opportunity.

As she is recognized with the Distinguished Alumni Award, Liza Jane MacNaughton’s legacy is reflected in the students who continue their education with support—and in the opportunities that extend from that work.
