Facilities

Supporting over 500 students in their studies, the facilities and studios in the department of Art & Design provide students with the space and access they need to turn their ideas into professional quality realties.
  • The Art Hub is our open lab at the heart of the Art and Design department. Featuring open access Macintosh computers, large format scanners, accessible printing, and surfaces and equipment for trimming, binding, and finishing printed work.

Within the Art Hub there is a “pocket lighting studio” which allows students to easily create photo documentation of smaller creative work on a sweep table using two wall-mounted lights. All that’s needed is a camera and a tripod.

The Art Hub can be found at AE 168

  • The print lab provides students with access to equipment they need for a variety of physical printing and prototyping, including large format ink jet printing, a fleet of 3D printers, a vinyl cutter, and a vacuum laser cutter.

The print lab can be found at AE 166

  • The digital equipment check out holds all the tools needed to create professional photographic, illustrated, and time-based visual media. Here students can check out the equipment they need including cameras, tripods, tablets, digital audio recording kits, and more.

The Digital Equipment Check Out Library can be found at AE 192

  • The ceramics complex includes multiple studios for artists working in clay, including a throwing room, hand building tables, glazing room, raku firing area and kiln room.
  • The six digital labs within the Art and Design department are all outfitted with high performance macintosh computers loaded with industry standard applications for creating portfolio ready design, illustration, and time based work.
  • The Honors Studios provides dedicated workspace for selected Art students who are actively developing an independent studio practice. Space is shared and limited. Students selected for AE 290 must use the studio for a minimum of 16 hours per week and follow all Art Department health, safety, and community guidelines.

  • The printmaking studio has a variety of tools, materials, and equipment to support printmaking and bookmaking classes and activities.

The printmaking studio has 3 flat-bed presses suitable for intaglio, relief, and polyester plate lithography. Additionally, there is a Vandercook SP-15 for letterpress printing metal type and photopolymer plates.

For intaglio, we utilize a vertical etching tank with a ferric chloride solution to etch copper plates. An Orbital XI platemaker is used for making photopolymer relief plates from film negatives.

  • The University Art Gallery at ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥, East Bay is a dynamic, 2,500-square-foot exhibition space dedicated to presenting innovative and inclusive contemporary art. As an essential part of the Art & Design Department, the gallery serves as both a professional venue and an active learning environment, supporting students, faculty, alumni, and visiting artists across a wide range of media and approaches.

Free and open to the public, the gallery is committed to fostering meaningful dialogue around the visual arts. Through exhibitions, critiques, workshops, and community engagement, the UAG offers audiences opportunities to explore creative practices that reflect the cultural richness and intellectual diversity of the East Bay.
